Why we choose to change

Do You Want to Change But Find You Are Struggling?

Most of us wait to change until we absolutely have to make a change. We wait until the doctor tells us we have to change our diet or we might die. Or we change when our partner tells us that if we don’t make changes they will leave or divorce us. Change is painful and usually happens when we realize that something has to change in our lives.

Get Ready to
Make Lasting Change!

If we want to create change in our lives, then we have to become more intentional.

How many times in this life have you told yourself, I'm never going to do that again, I'm never doing that, I'm done, I'm done, I'm done. Only to find yourself a few hours, days, weeks, or even months later, back doing the same thing.

How many times have you told yourself, I'm going to change, I'm never going to be that person again, I'm not going to do it again, and yet you do it again. It has been my experience as a professional therapist over the past 28 years that many individuals want to change, but they often fall back into old patterns.

Part of the reason why people fail is change requires a significant amount of effort on our minds, our bodies, our thoughts, and our emotions. If we want to create change in our lives, then we have to become more intentional. Furthermore, if you want to become more intentional, then you have to give more thought to the things that you have already learned, and you have to learn to unlearn.
The process of unlearning unhealthy habits requires us to create new patterns or new behaviors, and we have to establish new thought patterns in our lives. If you are a person who wants to change, one of the core things I'm going to invite you to do is to pause and reflect on the things that you're trying to change and understand that the change process is something that you do intentionally. It's something that you have to unlearn other habits or old habits, and then you have to implement new habits, new behaviors in order to make the change.

You also have to be prepared for when things get difficult because old patterns want to come back into play. In essence, what happens is the myelin sheath wraps around you, your mind, your nerves. This myelin sheath is something that is designed to help us be more efficient in what we do. (1)

When we try to create new patterns, old patterns are like, wait a second, wait a second, this is how we used to do it, this is how we do it, what are you doing? And so the change process is unlearning behaviors by intentionally creating new behaviors, new thought patterns, and learning how to respond when the old ones want to come back. In essence, if you already have something (a plan in place) that you're going to do, you're establishing new healthy patterns by unlearning.

The unlearning process requires us to prepare for new actions, and that's where I find most people don't succeed.  More often than not they are not fully prepared for the challenges that change requires.
